I think of myself as an enabler of opportunities and experiences of those around me (and myself!). The more I think about it, trying to understand and support those around me gives me both a challenge and lots of satisfaction. In a recent TEDx talk, I comment on how empathy can help us fully embrace the wonderful diversity in our lives.
As a researcher and teacher, I support my students to develop as independent, critical thinkers of timely issues in software research and practice. In 2022 I founded the INSPIRE: STEM for Social Impact Program, where, together with an amazing executive team and industry and academic mentors, we empower undergraduate as well as middle and secondary school students to work in inclusive teams and develop tech solutions for social good. I also lead the SEGAL Research Lab, where I mentor but continually learn from bright junior researchers. Not only does empathy allow us to develop strategies for more inclusive software, but also our workspaces are more inclusive and enjoyable on a daily basis.
As a mother, I enable my kids to grow an open, empathetic mind in the world around them. Whether we travel around the world or swim in BC's beautiful lakes, I often place them in (challenging) situations outside their comfort zone that make them a bit more resilient in life.
I thus allow myself to embrace a multifaceted life, busy but fulfilling. My active family has been, in fact, the best balance to my busy work life. Happy to share from my experience and how I continue to enjoy a long-term relationship with my family amidst a crazy life. I recently wrote a blog post reflecting on how I became who I am as an immigrant to Canada.
